Val Thorens snow report: Saturday 2nd January 2016

Skiers at New Year 2015-16, Val Thorens

It has been mainly sunny during the past week, apart from a very few flakes of snow on Tuesday evening, and about 2cm on Thursday night. It was also very busy on the pistes in Val Thorens - because only about 75% of the pistes were open, and quite a lot of skiers and boarders came over from the other valleys. This meant that the steeper runs became bumpy quite quickly. There were rocks and stones in places, but the snow cannons were working, especially in the second half of the week, when it was colder at night. The artificial snow improved the conditions slightly towards the end of the week.

It's snowing as I write (Saturday morning), and a good deal of snow is forecast during the coming week.

Today the temperatures at 8am were -2C in resort, and -7C at the top of the ski area.

According to the official figures, the snow depth is 40cm in resort, and 90cm at the top of the ski area, with 2cm of fresh snow at resort level (8am today), and 3cm at the top. All 27 lifts are open, and 53 pistes out of the total of 71. The links to Orelle are open, including via the new piste de Lory; the link to Les Menuires is open, via Mont de la Chambre but not via boulevard Cumin; and the link to Méribel Mottaret is open.

The avalanche risk is 2 out of 5 (and certain to go up as snow falls during the day and during the week).

Val Thorens snow report: Saturday 26th December 2015

Torchlit descent on Christmas Eve 2015

It's been sunny all week, apart from clouds and a very small amount of snow on Monday 21st December 2015. It was very busy up to and including Wednesday of the past week, with a lot of skiers over from the other resorts of the Three Valleys. This meant that the steeper pitches of the pistes became difficult in the afternoon, with hard, icy snow, stones, and bumps.

As the coming week is likely to be busy, local people and season workers have been asked not to ski. The snow cannons have been working overtime, and will continue to do so when temperatures are cold enough.

Today the temperatures at 8am were -1C in resort, and -2C at the top of the ski area.

According to the official figures, the snow depth is 45 cm at resort level, and 90cm at the top. All 27 lifts are open, and 54 pistes out of the total of 71. Most of the pistes which are closed won't open until we get a significant snowfall. The links to Orelle, Méribel Mottaret, and Les Menuires are open (but not all of them).

The avalanche risk remains at 1 out of 5.

Val Thorens snow report: Saturday 19th December 2015

It's been a sunny week, apart from snow on Tuesday night (about 2cm only). The snow has held up pretty well, but is generally better in the mornings when freshly pisted, than in the afternoons. Steeper pitches can be a little icy, and there are a few loose stones in places.

Today, the temperatures at 8am were 2C in resort, and 0C at the top of the ski area.

According to the official figures, there's 50cm snow depth at resort level, and 90cm at the top of the ski area. 26 lifts are open out of the total of 27, with just the lowest lift, Plan de l'Eau, yet to open. 47 pistes are open out of the total of 71. The links to Meribel Mottaret and Les Menuires via Mt de la Chambre are open, and the main link to Orelle is open; the link to Les Menuires via boulevard Cumin is closed, as is the link to Orelle via the new piste de Lory.

The avalanche risk is 1 out of 5.

Val Thorens snow report: Saturday 12th December 2015

Skicross World Cup, Val Thorens, December 2015

There's snow in Val Thorens. We might prefer there to be more, but compared with many other resorts, we're doing pretty well. The figures are as follows.

Today, the 8am temperatures were -1C in resort, and -3C at 3000m.

There's 60cm of snow at resort level, and 90cm at the top of the ski area. 25 lifts are open out of the total of 27, and 45 pistes out of 71. The link to Meribel Mottaret is open; the link to Les Menuires via Mont de la Chambre is open, but not via Boulevard Cumin; and the link to Orelle is open.

As a comment, the snow is better on the pistes which have snow cannons, and on the other pistes, there tend to be some stones, especially in the afternoon.

Val Thorens snow report: Saturday 27th December 2014

Snow falling on 27th December 2014 in Val Thorens

It was sunny and warmer than normal for the time of year at the start of the week. On Thursday 25th December, there was a very little snow in the morning, before the sky cleared. Friday 26th December was cold and sunny, then today, Saturday 27th December, we've had a big enough snowfall to transform conditions for a while at least.

Last week, the conditions in Val Thorens were better than in the rest of the Three Valleys, but the pistes were hard-packed in many places, and there were some loose stones, especially on the pistes without snow canons. At 8am today, there was 15cm of fresh snow at resort level, and 20cm at the top of the ski area. Many of the lifts were closed because of the snow and avalanche risk, but when the snowpack settles, all 27 lifts should open, including Plan de l' Eau, which has been closed until now. The links to Orelle, Les Menuires and Mottaret will also be open when safe.

The official snow depths are:

  • 70cm at resort level
  • 110cm at 3000m

The avalanche risk is 3 out of 5.

We had a little snow, especially on Wednesday afternoon and night (15 to 20cm). There was a mixture of rain and snow on Thursday, then sunshine on Friday. A little more snow fell on Friday night (1 to 2cm).

The snow conditions in Val Thorens remain quite good, with just a few loose stones on the pistes without snow canons.  Today, 26 lifts are open out of the total of 27, with Plan de l' Eau closed. 53 pistes are open out of 71. The link to Orelle remains open, and the links to Les Menuires and Mottaret via Funitel 3 Valleys and the 3 Valleys chair are open. Boulevard Cumin is closed.

In the coming week, Val Thorens is almost fully booked. The conditions in the rest of the 3 Valleys aren't great, so the Val Thorens ski area is likely to be busy.

The official snow depths are:

  • 60cm at resort level
  • 100cm at 3000m

The avalanche risk is 2 out of 5.

Val Thorens snow report: Saturday 6th December 2014

Bottom of Plan de l' Eau chair

Val Thorens opened as scheduled, on Saturday 22nd November 2014. The conditions were reasonable, but since then, we've had warm temperatures, and SE weather systems, which bring little snow. In the last few days, it has been colder, and the snow canons have been on, creating a better base on the pistes which are open.

At the moment, the higher lifts are open, and the lower ones (such as Plan de l' Eau, pictured above) are not. 16 lifts are open out of the total of 27, with all of those open lifts in the Peclet and Thorens sectors. The link via Grand Fond to Orelle is open. There are 24 pistes open out of the total of 71.

The official snow depths are:

  • 40cm at resort level, and
  • 80cm at 3200m

The avalanche risk is 2 out of 5. The other areas of the 3 Valleys were due to open today, but will now open a week later, on Saturday 13th December 2014.
