The closest the Tour de France 2016 gets to Val Thorens is when it visits Albertville on Friday 22nd July 2016. Albertville is the start town, or ville départ, of Stage 19 of the Tour de France 2016. It's a major Alpine stage, with climbs of the Col de la Forclaz Montmin, the Col de la Forclaz Queige, the Montée de Bisanne, and a final climb to the finish at Saint-Gervais-le-Bettex.

The day before the Albertville stage, the riders tackle an uphill time trial from Sallanches to Megève, and the day after, they take on Stage 20 in Haute Savoie, from Megève to Morzine. Stage 20 is also the route for this year's Etape du Tour.

Tour de France 1994 in Val Thorens

The Tour de France did visit Val Thorens once - on the 20th July 1994. It was a 149km stage from Bourg d'Oisans, which finished with an hors catégorie climb to Val Thorens. Marco Pantani fell and hurt himself, and it seemed he might abandon, but instead he pedalled his way to third place on the day. Colombian rider Nelson Rodriguez won the stage. A significant group of riders came in 26 minutes behind the winner, and should have been eliminated, but the commissaires showed clemency, and allowed them to take the start the next day.
