The highs and lows:

  • the friendliest: Chalet de la Marine & les Aiguilles de Péclet
  • the cheapest: les Aiguilles de Péclet (€3.75 a grand café au lait)
  • the most expensive: le Caribou (€5)
  • free mini-chocolate: les Deux Ours

Val Thorens mountain restaurant review: Les Aiguilles de Péclet

Val Thorens mountain restaurants. Les Aiguilles de Peclet mountain restaurant, in the Peclet sector of the Val Thorens ski area.

The welcome at the bar of Les Aiguilles de Péclet was friendly and polite. We even got a bonne journée from the Dutch lady who served our coffee. The price was €3.75. We drank our coffee on the sunny terrace. It tasted very good. The only quibble was that the saucer and spoon were dirty, but this didn't spoil the experience.

Pros: friendly service, good coffee, sunny terrace

Cons: none, except slightly dirty saucer and spoon

Val Thorens mountain restaurant review: Le Caribou

Val Thorens mountain restaurants, Le Caribou

Le Caribou was quiet when we visited. The service was fine, and the coffee strong and good. It cost €5, the most expensive we found. The interior of the restaurant is very attractive in a wooden-mountain-chalet style.

Val Thorens mountain restaurant review: Chalet Chinal Donat

Val Thorens mountain restaurant review - Chalet Chinal Donat, in the Rosael sector of the Val Thorens ski area

We ordered our coffee at the bar. The price was €3.90, and when we paid with a €20 note, our change was €5 short. We pointed this out, and the lady was apologetic. The coffee was fine, and the restaurant has a great sunny terrace, with wonderful views of surrounding mountains, and the Maurienne valley.

Pros: decent coffee, sunny terrace with great views

Cons: mistake over our change

Friendly service at the bar. The coffee cost €4. It was not especially strong, and quite milky, but still good. The décor of the wooden chalet is fairly modern and functional, but elegant. There is an unbeatable view from the terrace at the back on a good day.

Pros: polite service, good coffee, reasonable price, nice surroundings inside and out

Cons: none

Val Thorens mountain restaurant review: Le Chalet de Caron

Val Thorens mountain restaurants - view of the Chalet de Caron

We ordered our coffee from the bar, asking in French for a grand café au lait. The 'sorry?' in response was moderately rude - the lady made quite clear that she hadn't understood the foreign accent.

The price was €3.90.

The coffee looked good, with a nice froth on the top. It tasted as though the milk had gone a little sour, though.

Pros: nice sunny terrace, friendly dog, coffee looked good, reasonable price

Cons: moderately rude service, poor tasting coffee

The service wasn't effusive, but polite and friendly. There was no complaint when we paid the bill (€4) with a €50 note. The coffee was excellent, and even came with a mini chocolate.

Pros: good service, tasty coffee, free chocolate; nice mountain chalet style decor inside, and large terrace out; friendly dog
