Val Thorens news: visitor numbers for last winter 2011-12 up 2.4%

2nd July 2012

Val Thorens had a successful winter 2011-12, with a progression of 2.4% compared with 2010-11. The figures are for the number of visitor nights in the ski season. 2010-11 was itself a good winter, up 7% on 2009-10.

The local authority gives a breakdown of the resort's performance each month, in its Belleville Info newletter. There was a poor start to the season, with a lack of snow, and cancelled events, in November 2011. Too much snow in December meant that the road to Val Thorens was closed on several occasions, causing disruption. However, January and February were excellent, and March satisfactory. Finally, Easter was difficult, in spite of excellent snow conditions, and the numbers attending Dutch week were slightly lower than the year before.

In the second round, a head-to-head between Sarkozy and Hollande, the incumbent Sarkozy garnered 1206 votes, against 508 for his Socialist rival.

In Val Thorens specifically, the figures were 197 for Sarkozy, against 50 for Hollande, in the first round, and 278 to 111 for Sarkozy in the second round.

Overall, of course, Francois Hollande was the winner of the election, becoming President after the vote in May 2012.
